When you’re picking a class in Dungeons and Dragons, it’s a good idea to have goals for your character. An easy way to get a few goals is by making a list of a few magic items that would complement your character build.

BUT– Like all things in D&D, it’s wise to consult your dungeon master first before getting too fixated on items. Multiple factors are in play, is the campaign you’re playing in a high-magic or low-magic setting? Are magic items relatively accessible, or are they rare and difficult to acquire? These are essential factors to consider before making a list of items.

But that still leaves you begging the question, what items will suit my character? Here are three items to compliment your Cleric character build!

Mithral Armor

Has your party tried to stealth through a dungeon, and your cleric can’t roll above a 7? Well, it’s most likely because they’re rolling all of their stealth checks at disadvantage. Plate armor is excellent. It grants an AC of 18. However, it has a few drawbacks: it’s expensive, requires a strength score of 15, and requires the wearer to roll stealth at disadvantage.

Mithral Armor is incredible. An uncommon magic item grants the benefits of plate armor while removing most drawbacks. If you’re unsure what item to set your sights on at those lower levels, mithral armor-specifically mithral plate- is excellent for Clerics.

Mace of Disruption

Clerics and Paladins are the banes of all fiend and undead enemies. Few items work as well against these creature types as the Mace of Disruption. The Mace of Disruption is a rare item that requires attunement, and it grants the following benefits:

  • If you hit a fiend or an undead creature with the mace, that enemy takes an extra 2d6 radiant damage.
  • If a fiend or undead creature has fewer than 25 hit points after taking this damage, it must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be destroyed.
  • On a successful save the creature becomes frightened of you until your next turn.

Additionally, it sheds bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light for an additional 20 feet when you hold the weapon.

And lastly-maybe most importantly-our favorite Cleric, Pike Trickfoot, wielded this epic mace in campaign one of Critical Role.

Spellguard Shield

Even though this item appears in the basic rules, I’ve never encountered it before. The Spellguard Shield is a very rare item with a few great properties that make it an excellent pick for a Cleric.

The Spellguard Shield is not extraordinarily complicated, but what it lacks in sophistication makes up for potency. You still gain the effects of a standard shield, being +2 to AC. In addition,

While holding this shield, you have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects, and spell attacks have disadvantage against you.

Reducing the number of successful attacks against a Cleric can be extremely useful. Even if your character has the Warcaster feat, reducing the amount of Constitution saving throws can be vital to navigate encounters successfully! Many Cleric spells tend to involve concentration. This mean that if that pesky warlock and their eldritch blast find a chink in your armor causing you to lose concentration, that could spell disaster for your party!

I hope you like these items! I think they’re versatile enough to fit any fantasy game. Talk to your Dungeon Master about having these items as some potential goals for your character.
